Clovis Swim Club Assessments

August 2024- May 2025

To be assigned to a group, a swimmer must be able to swim 2 lengths of the pool freestyle (with side breathing) and swim 1 length of the pool backstroke. This must be done without an instructor in the water with them and without the aid of any floating device. Swimmers unable to perform these requirements will be referred to find swim lessons to develop these minimum requirements. We try to do all swim tests in the shallow end, they may be performed in the deepend of the pool if necessary to avoid other groups.

We offer our Academy (Novice) groups at Clovis East and Clovis North to athletes who complete the minimum skills at the assessment.

All Assessments will be done with 1 - 8 swimmers at a time.  We will try to perform the tests in the shallow end of the pool, but that is not guaranteed.  Swimmers should be mentally prepared to have to swim in the deepend if necessary.

The instructor will conduct the first 3 lengths (2 freestyle then 1 backstroke). The instructor will ask the swimmers who could not make it or barely made it, to climb out and the coach will talk to the parents of those swimmers about where they were assessed. The other swimmers will be asked to remain in the water on the wall with their heads above water (The ability to listen to a coach is part of the assessment).

The instructor will then lead the group in 3 lengths, one at a time (1 breaststroke, 1 butterfly, and 1 choice of stroke). Breaststroke and butterfly are not requirements, but are helpful.  Again, the instructor will remove swimmers who are unable to perform the additional strokes legally at this point and talk to parents about the group assignment.

The instructor will then take the remaining group and perform 6 x 50 Free on the 1:00 interval. Those that average faster than 35 seconds will be asked to stay for the final part of the assessment. Those who do not meet this will climb out and the instructor will talk to parents about the assignments.

The final set will be 4 x 100 IM @ 1:45. This will conclude the assessment for those who have made it this far.

Assessment Dates

Assessments will be on Wednesday Evenings at Clovis North and Clovis East at 6:40pm. Our Academy Coaches will be on site, if no one shows up in the first 15 minutes they will leave. Please plan to arrive between 6:30pm - 6:50pm. Assessments can take 5 - 10 minutes and a coach can only do a few swimmers at a time.

Registration after Assessment

Once assessed, you will complete the registration through our website and select the group assigned at the assessment. There will be a $100 annual registration fee (prorated throughout the year) and first month's dues charged at registration. The account will be 'pending approval' upon completion and swimmers may now attend practice. The account will be approved with in a few days by a member of our administrative staff and you will receive email directions on further setting up your account. Your account is used to sign up for swim meets and other events. It is also where you can add your e-mail to receive communications and update information, such as shirt size.

You can view equipment needed for each group on the website under the 'Team Info' drop-down menu under 'Equipment List'.  You don't have to have the equipment on your first day of practice, but please do try to have all the equipment within two weeks of practicing with us.  Most groups do some type of dryland exercises (running, body weight exercises, stretching) prior to entering the water, so it is best to arrive with workout clothes and shoes on over top of their swimsuit.  Masters group does not do dryland training.

If your swimmer cannot complete the minimum requirements to join Clovis Swim Club:

Clovis Swim Club does offer swim lessons for learn-to-swim students ages 3-12 seasonally May-August through Seahorse Swim School.  These lessons are NOT intended for swimmers who are already members of Clovis Swim Club, but are instead designed to help students become water safe and skilled enough to join Clovis Swim Club.  Information about our lessons program can be found at www.clovisaquatics.captynsites.com
